Keep the low end mono without shrinking your mix

FL Studio’s Spreader can collapse only the frequencies below its Low Bypass point to mono while leaving higher stereo information intact. This makes it far more precise than turning an entire bass track, instrument bus, or master channel into one centered signal.

The useful part is not simply getting “mono bass.” You can keep upper harmonics, distortion, chorus, reverb, and other width above the cutoff while tightening only the range that needs it. Before changing anything, use a full mono compatibility check once so you know whether the low end actually weakens when the channels are combined.

A wide bass is not automatically broken. Some patches carry harmless stereo detail in their upper harmonics while the fundamental already sits firmly in the center. Treating every bass preset with the same cutoff can flatten a sound that never needed fixing.

Spreader can mono the bass without touching the top​

Load Spreader on the bass track or bass bus you want to control, then set Low Bypass so the lower part of the signal sits outside the widening stage. FL Studio lets that control run from 10 Hz to 10 kHz, so you are not locked to one crossover chosen by the plugin.

Low Bypass by itself only prevents those frequencies from receiving Spreader’s stereo effect. It does not guarantee that stereo information already present below the cutoff becomes mono. Turn on the Mono switch when you actually want the bypassed range collapsed to the center.

The distinction matters with sampled basses, stereo synth patches, resampled effects, and instruments recorded through stereo processing. A patch may arrive with left-right differences before Spreader sees it. Bypassing those frequencies preserves the existing differences, while the Mono switch removes them.

Start around the region where the sub gives way to the audible body of the bass, then move the cutoff while the whole arrangement plays. Around 100 Hz can be a sensible audition point, but it is not a universal target. A bass whose character lives higher may tolerate a higher setting, while another can sound smaller if you pull too much of its lower midrange into the center.

A fixed bass cutoff is not an acoustic law​

Producers often repeat the idea that very low frequencies cannot be localized, which turns a useful mixing shortcut into a fake rule. Low-frequency direction cues do exist, particularly through timing differences between the ears, as controlled low-frequency localization tests demonstrate. You are choosing consistency and translation when you narrow the bottom, not correcting a law of human hearing.

Listen for what the change costs. A stereo electric bass recording may contain room information, pickup differences, or modulation that contributes to its size. A synthesized sub with a chorus effect may lose almost nothing useful when the lowest part is centered. Both cases need different crossover choices.

The best cutoff is usually the lowest point that solves the actual problem. Push it upward until the bass becomes stable in mono, then check whether the stereo version has lost movement or depth. If the fix starts changing the musical identity of the sound, back the control down.

Keep an eye on Spreader’s pre and post phase meters while you work. Values moving toward the negative side warn that left and right are becoming less correlated, while movement toward positive values indicates stronger alignment. The vectorscope gives another view of width, but neither display replaces listening to the summed signal.

Spreader’s Separation control needs extra care​

Spreader has two width ideas that are easy to lump together. Spread is designed to widen audio while preserving mono compatibility, whereas Separation uses the same mid-side style processing as FL Studio’s Mixer Stereo Separation control. Pushing Separation toward greater width can break mono compatibility.

Use Separation only when you want that different type of widening and are prepared to check the result. A bass can look impressively wide on the vectorscope while losing weight after summing. More width on the screen is not a quality score.

A cleaner setup is often to keep the bypassed lows mono, use Spread for the upper bass texture, and leave Separation near neutral unless the sound needs another adjustment. Doing so gives the sub a stable center without forcing the harmonics into the same narrow space.

Check the bass soloed briefly, then judge it inside the mix at normal level. The kick may make a cutoff that sounded perfect in isolation feel too thick, while a dense synth arrangement may benefit from slightly more centered low-mid energy. Move the Low Bypass point until the foundation stays consistent in stereo and mono without shaving away the part of the bass that gives the track its width.
