Kenya Tried to Silence School Play

Students from Butere Girls High School created a play called Echoes of War for the Kenya National Drama Festival. Their performance showed problems with leaders who care more about themselves than about people. Government officials tried to stop the play because it made them look bad. Carol Okumu, the drama teacher, stood up for her students but received no help from school leaders. The principal even wrote her a warning letter instead of supporting free speech.

The education ministry stayed quiet when it should have protected student rights. Drama festival officials did nothing helpful, either. They made the girls perform very early with no proper setup. Justice Fridah Okwany saved the day through her court ruling, giving students back their right to perform. She reminded everyone that our laws protect free expression even when powerful people feel uncomfortable.

The play finally happened, but damage was already done. Students learned that speaking the truth can bring punishment. Kenya needs to decide if it wants to hear young voices or silence them. School leaders must answer for abandoning their duties. True strength comes from listening to criticism, not shutting it down.
