Malawi Youth Slam Innovation Fund as Election Ploy

Youth activist Lucky Mbewe questions the government about the Youth Innovation Fund. He wants officials to prove this program is not just election politics. The National Youth Council of Malawi reopened applications for tourism projects. Officials say they received few submissions for tourism compared to farming and mining. The fund launch happens on July 2nd with 2 billion kwacha available.

Executive Director Rec Chapota extended the tourism deadline two weeks until June 16th. Young people and tourism operators need more time to understand requirements. Applications face strict review and background checks. Early-stage projects can receive up to 5 million kwacha. Growing businesses qualify for 15 million kwacha and established ventures can access 18 million kwacha.

Mbewe calls the fund a good idea that targets young people specifically. He warns the government must show the program will continue after September 16th elections. Many people might see this as a political tool to win youth votes. Officials need to promise the fund will survive beyond election day. Without clear commitments, citizens will doubt the program's real purpose.
