Mary Paula Turyahikayo secured the National Resistance Movement flag bearer position for Rukungiri District Woman Member of Parliament seat during the 2026 elections. The former Rubabbo County representative from the tenth Parliament defeated her competitors in primaries conducted on July 17, 2025. Right Mwongyera, the district NRM Elections Officer, announced her victory on Friday evening at 8:50 PM. Turyahikayo garnered 46,512 votes, representing 52.6 percent of ballots cast during the competitive race. Her closest rival, Medius Natukunda Kaharata, received 34,961 votes or 39.5 percent of the total.
The remaining candidates performed poorly against the frontrunners in the contest. Innocent Kashobera Enyaangi placed third with 3,172 votes, while Annah Nuwagaba Tumuramye earned 2,667 votes for fourth position. Prize Twinomuhangi and Caledonia Bakironda Musimeenta received 820 and 314 votes respectively. Mwongyera presented the official declaration form to Turyahikayo at Rukungiri District Council Hall amid supporter celebrations. General Henry Tumukunde and Major General Jim Muhwezi Katugugu won their respective constituency races.
