Police arrested a Masvingo couple in Beitbridge after finding marijuana in their possession. Simbarashe Kagande, 41, received a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence Monday for breaking drug laws when he appeared before resident magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba. His wife, Isabell Mhangami, 34, faces trial on Tuesday at the same court. Magistrate Gwazemba suspended six months of Kagande's original 36-month sentence for five years with conditions. The court ordered the seizure of all marijuana weighing 0.564 kilograms as part of the judgment.
The couple arrived at Masvingo turn off with various items, planning to catch rides, according to prosecutor Ronald Mugwagwa. Detectives, acting on tips about marijuana headed for Masvingo, stopped them on April 13. A search of their belongings revealed the marijuana, valued at $56. Officers immediately took both into custody. The husband has already begun serving his sentence at a local correctional facility. Local authorities consider this arrest part of ongoing efforts against drug trafficking in the border region.
