Men Nabbed With N$5M Cannabis Haul Near Ariamsvlei

Police caught two men carrying drugs worth over 5 million Namibian dollars near the border. Officers arrested the suspects Thursday night around 11:20 PM between Ariamsvlei and Nakop border posts. The men from Tanzania and Eswatini face court Monday at Karasburg Magistrate's Court. Deputy Commissioner Nicodemus Mbango said patrol teams spotted five suspicious people hiding behind bushes. Officers jumped from their vehicle to chase the group.

Three suspects escaped across the South African border during the pursuit. Police managed to capture two men and found five large bags left behind. The bags contained 114 plastic packages of cannabis weighing more than 117 kilograms. Officers valued the marijuana at nearly 6 million dollars for street sales. Both suspects face charges for dealing illegal drugs.

Immigration violations may add to their legal troubles. One suspect carried no travel documents during his arrest. The other man had papers but failed to stamp them at Nakop border crossing. Authorities continue investigating the drug smuggling operation. The case highlights ongoing border security challenges between southern African nations.
