The Young Mathematician Association of The Gambia (YMA) held its Annual Maths Quiz Competition yesterday. It took place at the University of The Gambia's Law Faculty Auditorium in Kanifing.
Dr. Ebrima Bittaye started the event with a welcome speech. He mentioned that the Young Mathematician Association began in 2015. Their goal is to use mathematics to help young people in The Gambia reach their full potential.
Thirty-four secondary schools from regions 1 and 2 participated in the competition. This allowed students to show off their amazing math skills and knowledge. The event also honored the memory of Pa Malick Sallah, who used to teach mathematics at The Gambia College School of Education.
Dr. Bittaye said the quiz competition does more than just celebrate math skills. It shows the power of education and teamwork. He thanked China for partnering with The Gambia in education, building projects, and helping people gain new abilities. China has helped The Gambia grow in important ways.
Dr. Bubacarr Bah from the MRC in The Gambia discussed the importance of mathematics in education and society. He explained that math is more than just doing calculations. It helps students think critically and solve difficult problems.
Lamin Singhateh from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education promised that the Ministry would work to make sure schools have excellent mathematics teachers. He believed the quiz competition would inspire young people to see how important math is for technology and making the country stronger.
Miss Mariatou Sallah shared memories of her grandfather, Pa Malick Sallah. She described him as an amazing person who helped the family and the nation. He made a big difference in education at The Gambia College. Mr. Sallah helped teach many important people in the country, like Isatou Njie Saidy, who used to be the Vice President of The Gambia, as well as Dr. Bubacarr Bah and Dr. Ebrima Bittaye.
