Milk Imports Plunge as Local Dairy Sizzles

Zimbabwe has great news about its milk and dairy products! The country needed fewer dairy items from other countries in 2024 compared to 2023. They spent $20 million on buying dairy products from abroad instead of $27 million the year before.

The farmers in Zimbabwe produced more milk themselves. They produced 114 million liters of milk in 2024, which was much better than the 99 million liters they made in 2023. This means the country can make more dairy products like cheese, yogurt, and ice cream.

The government helped make this happen by creating special rules about bringing milk powder into the country and asking companies that make dairy products to help local farmers raise more cows. The government wants Zimbabwe to make all the milk it needs without buying from other countries.

Mr. Edward Warambwa leads a group of dairy farmers in Zimbabwe. He believes they will make enough milk for everyone in the country this year. They want to make 132 million liters of milk, which would be perfect for what Zimbabwe needs.

The farmers are doing many things to reach this goal. They brought in new cows that could give more milk. They also learned better ways to feed their cows and help them have baby cows. The good rain this year helps the grass grow well for the cows to eat.

This means Zimbabwe might not need to buy much milk from other countries anymore. The farmers can make enough milk for everyone in Zimbabwe to enjoy fresh dairy products made right in their own country!
