Mnangagwa Cash for War Vets Fuels Vote Buying

President Mnangagwa wants to stay in charge of Zimbabwe until 2030. People say he gives lots of money to war veterans, who helped Zimbabwe become free many years ago because he wants them to help him stay president.

Mr. Mahiya, who leads the war veterans in Mnangagwa's party, says this money will make their lives better. The president promised to give one and a half million US dollars to each area of Zimbabwe. He also says every war veteran can have their water well at home. Some water drilling machines have started making these wells already.

Dr. Tungwarara, who helps the president, thinks giving money to war veterans makes sense. He believes Zimbabwe should thank these people who fought for the country's freedom. But many people disagree. They think President Mnangagwa just wants war veterans to vote for him in the next big election in 2028.

Some war veterans remember how nobody helped them after the fighting ended in 1980. The United Nations tried to help them start new lives, but that plan did not work well. Mr. Mahiya says things will be different this time, but many people wonder if that's true.

People who work against President Mnangagwa say he uses Zimbabwe's money the wrong way. They believe he gives money to war veterans just to make them like him. Many people worry this might hurt Zimbabwe's future. They think the president cares more about keeping his job than making the country better for everyone.
