Mnangagwa peddles Zimbabwe women equality fantasy

Since 2017, the Second Republic led by President Mnangagwa has advanced women’s empowerment as part of the drive toward an upper middle class economy by 2030. Government has ratified CEDAW, the Beijing Platform for Action, the African Union Charter on the Rights of Women, and the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development, aligning national policy with global standards. The Constitution requires gender balance across public institutions, with Section 17 and Section 80 reinforcing equal dignity and opportunity, while the National Development Strategy 1 strengthens these goals. At the United Nations, Zimbabwe reaffirmed support for the Beijing agenda, noting reforms shaped by the 1995 declaration across twelve areas from education and health to leadership and the economy, and called for faster action under the Beijing Plus 30 plan. Zimbabwe prioritises poverty reduction, inclusive economic empowerment, and wider leadership roles for women to secure peace, stability, and shared prosperity by 2030.
