Mob kills teen suspect in Karonga chicken theft

Karonga police condemned residents who beat a teenager to death after accusing him of poultry theft at Mwanganda Village. Francis Msiska died from head trauma on October 20, around 3 a.m., when a crowd attacked him while two alleged accomplices fled the scene. The mob left his body near the Karonga-Chitipa Road and burned it with dried vegetation before officers recovered remains for autopsy at the district hospital.

Police spokeswoman Margaret Msiska said the 17-year-old lived at Lusubilo Orphan Care until staff expelled him in 2018 for behavioral problems. Relatives supervised him until early 2025, when he moved to the township alone and survived without family support. Authorities urged communities to surrender suspects rather than administer vigilante punishment through illegal violence. The victim came from Kayaghaya Village under the jurisdiction of Traditional Authority Mwilangombe.
