Modi hails literacy scheme as India races to UN goal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Understanding of Lifelong Learning for All in Society program on Monday after it expanded education access for adults nationwide. The initiative, launched in 2022 under the National Education Policy 2020, targets rural areas, and women benefit most from the effort. Rural and female literacy rates increased substantially, and India progresses toward meeting the United Nations literacy goals by 2030.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced Himachal Pradesh as the fifth fully literate state last month after Tripura, Mizoram, Goa, and Ladakh achieved the milestone. The government marked International Literacy Day with a focus on digital learning technology. Officials emphasized that education forms the foundation for national development, and the achievement demonstrates successful collaboration between government agencies, communities, and volunteers across the country.
