Myanmar, Saudi Arabia discuss tourism at UN meet

A Myanmar delegation, led by Deputy Minister U Phyo Zaw Soe, participated in the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly in Saudi Arabia. The assembly, chaired by Saudi Minister for Tourism Ahmed Al-Khatib, addressed organizational matters, including its financial status and membership. Attendees approved the appointment of Shaikha Al Nowais from the UAE as the next secretary general, with her term beginning in 2026.

The delegation engaged in multiple associated meetings, observing collaborative efforts to advance the global tourism sector. Deputy Minister U Phyo Zaw Soe held separate discussions with Saudi tourism officials, exploring potential bilateral cooperation. He also met with representatives from several nations, including Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, and Uganda, to discuss mutual tourism agreements and market promotion.

Furthermore, the group attended the TOURISE discussion in Riyadh, examining industry challenges. The next UN Tourism General Assembly is scheduled for 2027 in the Dominican Republic.
