Nairobi-Nakuru gridlock worsens, KeNHA blames lane chaos

Heads up for anyone driving between Nairobi and Nakuru. The highways authority says to expect major traffic jams. They report a huge spike in vehicles causing backups, especially around Naivasha, Gilgil, Kikopey, and Nakuru town. Bad driving is making it worse, with lots of lane indiscipline and illegal overlapping blocking the flow. This route is a major link to the Rift Valley and western regions, so delays are stacking up during peak hours.

Officials say they are working with traffic police to manage the congestion. They are telling drivers to be patient, follow officer's instructions, and stop overlapping. While one problematic stretch near Salgaa has been cleared, they warn people not to use the wrong side of dual carriageways even if traffic is slow. This comes after some travelers got stuck overnight in the gridlock recently. The backups are partly blamed on holiday travel volume and some roadworks reducing capacity. Similar congestion is hitting other major highways as people head out of cities for the season.
