Namibia bets big on business events boom

A new government office aims to grab a bigger piece of the global events business. Namibia's environment and tourism minister, Pohamba Indileni Daniel, launched the Namibia Convention Bureau. She called it a fresh start for the country's tourism and economy after the pandemic slump.

The bureau will target the meetings and conferences sector to bring in more money and jobs. Daniel noted Namibia already hosted over three dozen major international gatherings recently, like an African Union summit. Those events pumped millions into local businesses. The country previously had no central office to chase these opportunities, a problem now solved.

This push connects directly to national job creation goals. Daniel said the government updated laws and even made a special visa for event attendees. She asked private investors to help build better venues and services. The minister framed the launch as Namibia announcing it is officially open for the global convention trade.
