Namibia wants to boost energy production across all sources to improve living standards for its people. National Planning Commission director general Kaire Mbuende spoke about these plans during a visit from Belgium tech company CMB.TECH Enterprises at State House Tuesday. The government aims to expand green energy, solar, hydro, green hydrogen, oil, gas and nuclear power options. Energy serves as a foundation for development and better quality of life, Mbuende explained. The country sees multiple energy pathways as key to progress.
Belgian shipping company CMB.TECH Enterprises operates 255 ships from Antwerp and focuses on fleet containers. Company chief executive Alexander Saverys announced plans to invest in green hydrogen and green ammonia production. Ships currently burn diesel fuel, but the company wants to switch to cleaner alternatives. Smaller vessels could use green hydrogen power systems. Larger ships would run on ammonia fuel systems.
The challenge lies in current production methods for these alternative fuels. Most ammonia and hydrogen comes from burning coal and gases that release carbon dioxide. CMB.TECH wants to produce green hydrogen and ammonia from seawater instead. Namibia offers ideal conditions for this type of production.
