Nessebar mayor dodges blame as Elenite floods kill tourists

Nessebar municipality Mayor Nikolay Dimitrov declined to confirm whether illegal construction exists in the Elenite holiday village. He told reporters that the focus remains on helping people affected by the disaster.

Dimitrov defended the municipality's preparedness when questioned about ravine maintenance before the flooding occurred. He stated that services completed their required duties, but the sheer volume of rainfall overwhelmed existing infrastructure.

The mayor emphasized that current priorities center on crisis headquarters operations and victim assistance rather than investigations. He indicated that inspections will follow once immediate response efforts conclude.

Municipal crews cleaned all storm sewers and manholes before the heavy rainfall began, according to Dimitrov. Workers continue operating continuously to address ongoing drainage issues caused by what he described as an act of nature that exceeded normal prevention measures.
