Nigeria Eyes Gambia for Blue Economy Power Play

Nigeria wants to work with The Gambia to make the sea safer and help both countries make more money. Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola from Nigeria said this at a big meeting about using the ocean in smart ways.

Dr. Dayo Mobereola spoke for Mr. Oyetola at the meeting. He said Nigeria plans to make its sea safety program bigger. This program is called the Deep Blue Project. They want it to protect more of the ocean around many African countries.

"Nigeria wants to help keep everyone safe and work together with other countries," Dr. Mobereola said. "Many ships are sailing around Africa because of problems in another part of the world. We need to protect these ships."

Dr. Mobereola also asked other countries to vote for Nigeria in an important world group about ships and oceans. This group helps make rules about using the sea. If Nigeria joins this group, Africa will have more say in these important talks.

Nigeria has done a good job keeping pirates away from its waters. No pirates have attacked ships near Nigeria for three years. Big world groups have said Nigeria is doing very well with its Deep Blue Project.

Nigeria continues to work with other countries in West and Central Africa. They all want to use the ocean to make money in ways that are good for the environment.
