NRM chairman promises fair elections ahead of 2026 vote

Dr. Tanga Odoi leads the ruling party's election commission and wants to run clean primary elections in 2026. He made this promise after the messy 2021 primaries that saw fights and chaos across Uganda. The worst violence happened in Mawogola North where two powerful candidates battled each other with bloodshed. President Musevwhile's brother had to back down after talks at State House. Another ugly scene played out in Mbale city between two women leaders.

Over 800 people have signed up to run for different positions out of nearly 3,000 who showed interest. Odoi expects more candidates will register as the deadline approaches since people often wait until the last minute. Eight candidates got nominated without any competition against them. The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among was one of them after her rival got kicked out of the race.

The commission chair says everything runs smoothly despite crowds at their offices. He admits they get busy serving large numbers of hopeful candidates at once. Shartis Musherure feels confident this election will be more peaceful than the previous one. The party wants to prove it can organize fair elections without the drama from before.
