Patriotic League of Uganda Plans Peaceful Protest Against Parliament.
KAMPALA, Uganda - The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) met at their Naguru headquarters in Kampala on Friday. They finalized plans for a February 10 protest against Parliament.
The protest is in response to what PLU calls Parliament's mishandling of proceedings involving Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).
Last week, the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee summoned the CDF to explain his controversial tweets, which included threats against opposition leaders Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) and Dr. Kizza Besigye.
Muhoozi rejected the summons and called for protests against Parliament, accusing it of corruption and mismanagement.
In a statement released during the Friday meeting, PLU expressed strong displeasure with the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee. They accused its members of going off-topic during a January 16 session. The session was meant to discuss the Ministry of Defence's budget framework.
The PLU statement criticized the committee's insistence on Gen. Muhoozi's physical presence. The Ministry delegation was led by the Defence Minister and included the CDF's deputy.
"The committee chose to throw out the delegation demanding the CDF's presence in person. This had nothing to do with the discussion of the National Budget Framework Paper," the statement said.
During the Committee session, Makindye East MP Derrick Nyeko stated, "Accountability is not optional. The CDF must respect Parliament's authority, just like any other public servant."
The PLU announced that the February 10 protest would start at their Naguru headquarters. It will proceed to Parliament, where they plan to deliver a petition to the Speaker.
"We have arranged a peaceful and orderly demonstration for February 10, 2025, to march to parliament. We want to express our displeasure on how the committee conducted itself and hand in our petition to the speaker," said PLU.
The group emphasized that the march would be peaceful and disciplined. To avoid disruptions or chaos, they will not allow anyone to join along the way.
The PLU restated its commitment to defending Gen. Muhoozi. They said, "We shall stand and defend Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba at any cost against bad elements who want to tarnish his hard-earned reputation."
