Prison Warder Killed Over Alleged Generator Theft in Rukungiri

Officials report a corrections officer lost his life early Thursday when a security guard shot him for allegedly attempting to steal equipment. The incident happened at approximately 1:00 am at Babuuze Bar and Lodge located in Kakabada A village within Rukungiri Municipality.

Lance Corporal Boniface Ojok, a 33-year-old officer working at Rukungiri Government Prison, had spent the evening watching sports with several colleagues. After the game finished, Ojok handed his cell phone to fellow corrections officer James Otim and mentioned he needed to use the restroom.

His coworkers stood outside waiting for his return when they heard gunfire nearby. They immediately ran toward the sound and discovered Ojok lying deceased, surrounded by blood, with a generator positioned next to his body.

The shooter identified himself as Peter Byaruhanga, a 22-year-old security professional employed by SWATT Security Limited who lives in Kakabada A village. Byaruhanga admitted firing the fatal shots, explaining he caught Ojok attempting to take the generator without permission.

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting death. Elly Maate, the spokesperson for Kigezi Region police, confirmed authorities are examining all aspects of the case to determine exactly what happened during the confrontation between the security guard and corrections officer.

Residents expressed shock at the violent incident occurring at a popular establishment. Authorities urge anyone with additional information about events leading up to the shooting to come forward and assist in the investigation.
