SADC and EAC team up for Congo peace

SADC and EAC agreed yesterday to strengthen their peace efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo during a crucial meeting in Harare. These two African groups want to end the long conflict that has made eastern DRC unstable for years. They met after earlier talks between senior officials and heads of state to discuss this important issue.

Professor Amon Murwira led the Zimbabwe and SADC team at the meeting. Other Zimbabwe officials included Defense Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, State Security Minister Lovemore Matuke, Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe, and Tourism Minister Barbara Rwodzi. Military leaders from various countries also joined the talks, adding their expertise to find solutions.

The officials made good progress in implementing their leaders' decisions. Professor Murwira said the DRC situation needs urgent collective action toward peace. He stressed that Africans must solve African problems. Their decisions aim to help end the long conflict in the DRC.

They promised to start using their joint plan quickly. This plan includes both political and military actions to fix security and humanitarian problems in the DRC. The plan covers short-term, medium-term, and long-term needs. Professor Murwira urged everyone to take concrete steps and implement decisions quickly.

Technical coordination will help track progress and identify areas needing more attention. Earlier, Professor Murwira called for peace and an end to the humanitarian crisis. He said the real fight should be against poverty, which requires knowledge and skills. He noted that the weapons causing destruction come from outside the region.

He warned that history would judge them harshly if they failed to act. He asked everyone to think about millions of displaced people. Professor Murwira said Zimbabwe and SADC want Africa to represent life, not death and called for unity to build a better future for everyone.

Kenya's Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, highlighted how the crisis affects vulnerable groups, especially children and women. He cited UN data showing over 700,000 people have been forced from their homes. He emphasized the need for lasting peace and cooperation between the African Union and SADC to implement agreements.

Dr. Mudavadi praised the African Union for supporting their previous statement. He explained that the ministers' meeting prepares for the upcoming Heads of State summit. The ministers must refine strategies for the leaders to consider before implementation. Dr. Mudavadi thanked all countries for showing commitment to helping the Congolese people by working together on a peace roadmap.
