Tanzania plans major railway infrastructure expansion to capitalize on its position linking East and Southern African trade routes. President Samia Suluhu Hassan told Parliament that authorities will complete Standard Gauge Railway segments connecting Makutupora to Tabora, extending through Isaka to Mwanza and Kigoma, plus a line reaching Burundi via Uvinza and Musongati. Additional construction will link Tanga with Musoma and Mtwara with Mbamba Bay while extending service to Mchuchuma and Liganga mining areas.
The government intends to rehabilitate existing infrastructure including TAZARA and upgrade Meter Gauge Railway sections between Tabora and Kigoma, Kaliua and Mpanda, Tanga and Arusha, plus Ruvu to Mruazi. Private operators will manage services on completed lines under Tanzania Railways Corporation to reduce costs and improve efficiency. Rapidly expanding urban centers including Dar es Salaam, projected to reach 10 million residents by 2030, will receive modern commuter rail systems to support economic activity and sustainable development.
