Samsung's HBM reportedly costs up to 25% more than rivals

Samsung may be charging data centers 25% more for HBM memory than its main rivals, based on an unverified industry estimate. The Korean chipmaker is said to be asking $4.50, while Micron and SK hynix have lower quotes. Supply reliability may explain why some buyers are willing to pay the gap.

For Micron, the reported price sits at $4. SK hynix comes in at $3.60 to $3.80. Those figures suggest a clear price gap, though the account does not say which type of HBM the quotes cover. That makes a direct comparison tricky.

And Samsung's HBM4 may carry an even steeper price than its older memory. Past claims put its quote in the mid-to-high $4 range, roughly three times the amount it sought for HBM3E. The exact terms of those deals remain unclear.

The main issue for large data centers is whether chip firms can deliver the parts they need on a steady basis. Samsung may have an advantage here, as its chipmaking business gives it more control over key stages of production. But that does not prove why it may charge more.

Another claim puts Samsung's HBM4 yield at 80%, which would mean that a high share of its output meets the needed quality level. The figure has not been confirmed in the account, yet it points to why stable factory results matter for memory supply.

Micron, meanwhile, has had to deal with the hard task of making more complex chips. The firm is said to be relying on strong DRAM sales, with one forecast putting its gross margin at 95% in 2027. That remains a projection, not a result it has achieved.

Samsung also has a wider chip business to draw from. Its mature 4nm process is said to help make HBM4 parts with fewer defects, while work on 2nm chips for 5G modems may help it seek deals with firms such as Qualcomm.

Still, these price claims come from a post that points to an expert interview that was not available for review. Without firm quotes tied to clear HBM models, the numbers offer a glimpse of possible market pricing rather than proof of what every data center pays.
