St. Petersburg expands biometric payments to public transport

St. Petersburg leaders want people to pay for bus rides with their faces. City officials made a deal with VTB bank during the major business meeting. The new system will let riders scan their faces instead of using cards or cash. Workers plan to add this technology to all buses and trams around the city. This follows the face payment test that started on subway trains last December.

People must sign up through a special government app to use face payments. They also need to visit a VTB website and agree to share their face data. Riders have to connect their bank account to the system before it works. The computer will recognize their face and take money from their card automatically. No more digging through pockets for exact change or metro cards.

The face scanning project worked well on subway trains for six months. City leaders decided to expand the program after seeing good results underground. Bus and tram riders will soon have the same payment option as subway users. Technology companies believe face payments make public transport faster and easier. Fewer people will miss their ride because they cannot find their wallet.
