St Petersburg Teacher Brawls With Migrant Student

Russia opened a new probe into a clash between a math teacher and a migrant student at a St. Petersburg bus stop. The fight happened on April 17 near School No. 338 in the Nevsky District, according to local news source Fontanka. The student's mother claims the teacher started everything inside the school building before things escalated outside.

The mother said her ninth-grade son heard the teacher yelling and using bad language toward female students. When her son responded to the girls' call for help, the teacher allegedly told him he had no right to be there because he was a migrant. They were supposed to meet with the principal after classes ended. The mother reports that the teacher tried to leave, but her son grabbed his shoulder to stop him. The teacher then hit the student.

School officials began investigating what happened. The Investigative Committee of Russia also stepped in, with its chairman, Alexander Bastrykin, ordering a criminal case to be opened about the incident. Both sides have different stories about who started the fight. The confrontation raises questions about the treatment of migrant students in Russian schools. The case continues as investigators collect statements from everyone involved.
