Sugar Tax Funds to Upgrade Zimbabwe's Cancer Centers

Zimbabwe plans to buy new cancer machines fast. PRAZ, the group that checks buying plans, said yes to this quick purchase. The money comes from taxes on sugar, which has brought in US$18 million.

Health Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora shared good news. His team asked cancer doctors what machines they need most. They can now buy these machines in just five days instead of waiting long. They want to finish buying before this year ends.

Zimbabwe has two places that treat cancer right now. These are at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare and Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo. The old machines there kept breaking down. The government fixed them, but they need more machines.

The health team has big plans. They want to add more machines at the two main hospitals. They also want to make new cancer care places in Chinhoyi, Gweru, Masvingo, and Mutare. Each new place will get all the tools it needs.

Other health projects move forward too. At Mpilo Hospital, they built most of a new TB testing place. Chitungwiza Hospital gets a new water tank. Some army and prison hospitals got new X-ray machines.

They also build rooms for oxygen at Lupane and Chinhoyi hospitals. These should finish this month. Ten more hospitals will get better places for mothers to wait and have babies. These include Mt Darwin, St Albert's, and other rural spots.
