Trump delays tariffs as Mexico sends border troops

President Donald Trump has delayed new tariffs on Mexican imports. Mexico agreed to send 10,000 troops to the border. The goal is to reduce the flow of illegal drugs.

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum said the deal also includes a U.S. commitment. The U.S. will take steps to limit the flow of guns into Mexico.

Trump had planned a 25% tax on goods from Mexico starting Tuesday and threatened tariffs on Canada and China.

Sheinbaum said she and Trump will evaluate the steps over the first month. They aim to reach an agreement that respects sovereignty.

The key will be whether fewer weapons reduce violence in Mexico. They also want to disrupt drug trafficking.

Sheinbaum said "physical meetings" between U.S. and Mexican officials may be needed. She and Trump plan to stay in contact.

Mexico will deploy 10,000 National Guard troops to the border. Sheinbaum expects a military plan later today. It will be implemented "immediately."

U.S. stock markets fell slightly after Trump confirmed the tariffs over the weekend. They have since regained some ground.

Trump also warned of tariffs on the EU. But he suggested a deal with the UK is possible.

Trump cites various reasons for the tariffs, including border security, drug inflows, and trade deficits. Canada has already introduced retaliatory tariffs.

Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau plan to speak again today. On Saturday, Trudeau announced his own tariffs on U.S. goods.
