US backs Morocco on Sahara plan

The US backs Morocco's claim over the Sahara region. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in Washington last Tuesday. During their talk, Rubio said America recognizes Morocco's control of the Sahara. He called Morocco's autonomy plan serious, credible, and realistic - the only path to solving the dispute fairly and permanently.

This continues the position first announced when President Trump proclaimed in December 2020 after speaking with King Mohammed VI. Rubio believes real autonomy under Moroccan leadership remains the only workable answer. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce reported that Rubio wants all parties to start discussions right away. These talks should use Morocco's Autonomy Proposal as their framework to find a solution everyone accepts. Rubio promised that America would help move this process forward.
