NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako left EOCO custody Monday night after paying 50 million Ghana cedis bail. People call him Chairman Wontumi and he walked free around 8 pm June 2. His lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi told Neat FM radio that officials helped finish the paperwork late. EOCO investigators want Wontumi back Wednesday June 4 and again Monday June 9. The Economic and Organised Crime Office continues looking at his case.
Two MPs helped Wontumi make bail when others could not provide proper papers. Bryan Acheampong from Abetifi and George Boahen Oduro from New Edubease put up property worth more than needed. Businessman Kennedy Agyapong tried to help but his documents were not complete. A supporter from Somanya also failed to meet requirements for backing the bail. Appiah-Kubi thanked both MPs for saving his client from staying longer behind bars.
Wontumi feels sick and wants permission from police to see doctors for treatment. He missed a Criminal Investigations Department meeting last Thursday because EOCO held him. The lawyer plans to ask CID officials to let Wontumi get medical care before future meetings. Court orders require him to report back for questioning about the ongoing investigation. Officials extend office hours to complete his release process Monday evening.
