Xbox founder slams leadership for price hike and brand missteps

Laura Fryer, one of the original founders of Xbox, shared her thoughts on the state of Xbox and Xbox Game Pass in a recent video on her personal YouTube channel. Fryer expressed frustration with Xbox leadership, criticizing their "bubble" mentality and failure to listen to player feedback. She called the company’s response to the Game Pass price hike "tone-deaf" and said the decision reflected a lack of understanding about what made Xbox successful in the first place. Fryer described the price increase as a "betrayal," suggesting that it prioritizes greed over gaming.

Fryer lamented the loss of key elements that once defined the Xbox brand, such as a dedicated console, exclusive first-party titles, and a strong partnership with game developers. She argued that Xbox was originally about creating a closed ecosystem where the company controlled both the customer and developer relationships, not just selling hardware. Fryer criticized the current "This is an Xbox" approach, which she feels dilutes the brand’s value by making everything part of the Xbox umbrella.

While acknowledging the business rationale behind shifting to services like Game Pass, Fryer argued that Xbox’s current leadership doesn’t truly understand players or developers. She expressed concern that poor decisions are being made out of incompetence or experimentation, noting that Xbox’s shift toward cloud gaming could indicate a misguided strategy. Though no longer with Xbox, Fryer’s nostalgic perspective highlights concerns about the direction of the brand and the potential fallout from recent decisions.
