ZIFA backs Mario Marinica after Algeria loss

The Zimbabwe Football Association has defended its newly appointed national team coach, Marian Marinica, against online criticism following a recent friendly match loss. The team was defeated by Algeria, extending its winless streak. ZIFA officials stated their full confidence in the Romanian tactician, citing his experience and capability to lead the team successfully.

The association also addressed rumors surrounding midfielder Tawanda Chirewa’s early departure from the team camp. Officials clarified that his exit was a pre-arranged agreement with his English club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and reflected a professional understanding between the organizations. They denied allegations of player unrest or that the coach had lost control of the team.

Defender Gerald Takwara noted the team delivered a stronger second-half performance against a skilled Algerian side. Coach Marinica himself acknowledged that his players’ work rate in the initial period did not meet his expectations. The team now prepares for its next international friendly.
