Zimbabwe's plan makes life better for disabled

Zimbabwe just started a five-year action plan for its National Disability Policy, running from 2024 to 2028. This plan helps ensure people with disabilities can exercise all their rights, find more chances to succeed, and help build the country. The government wants to incorporate disability concerns into many areas, such as government services, schools, medical care, and job markets across the nation.

Public Service Minister Edgar Moyo discussed at the launch event how this plan turns big ideas into real actions everyone can measure. He said it creates a clear path for everyone involved—government offices, businesses, partner groups, and community organizations. The plan brings these groups together with proper funding to make things happen correctly instead of leaving them scattered.

Moyo explained that the plan targets specific problems faced by people with disabilities. These include trouble getting education, healthcare, jobs, and social support programs. The document clearly states when things should happen and which government departments must handle each task. This approach puts disability needs at the center of planning rather than adding them as an afterthought to existing programs.

The government included ways to pay for everything, plus strategies to find more money when needed. Minister Moyo promised his department would carefully track all progress to keep everyone honest about results. Elena Constantinou spoke for UN leader Edward Kallon at the event, praising Zimbabwe's work on disability rights since President Mnangagwa first announced the policy back in June 2021.

She applauded how the ministry moved beyond just talking about disability rights to actually doing something about them. Constantinou called the new five-year plan an important step forward that would improve management and accountability throughout all ten provinces. She mentioned that creating the plan shows how serious the government feels about including disability concerns when making budget decisions for the country.
