mukadzi or murume wemweya

means a spiritual wife or husband respectively.

Basically, those who are attached to a spiritual spouse will often have a hard time getting married or if they get married they will have unexplained marital problems which are less likely to be resolved with neither having a mature discussion about things nor the use of common sense, that is.

One of the reasons some people may end up in a spiritual marriage is often a result of them channeling spirits they don't really understand because spirits are cunning and can shift the goalposts if necessary.

The second reason is people who often have numerous promiscuous flings on a regular basis may unbeknownst to them partake in sex-magick rituals, and the rest is history. For example, sleeping with somebody who has mamhepo ("bad or negative energy") or a person whose mhiko ("magick oath") requires him or her to have multiple sexual partners for it to continue working.

The third reason is how the act of purposefully bewitching (kuroya) the next person with success can attach to them, a spirit bride.

The fourth reason is, of course, generational curses that need to be resolved otherwise the same tune plays on to the next generation. For example, ngozi ("an avenging spirit") can become a spirit spouse in the family of mhondi ("the murderer") who took their life.
