Accra Gears Up for Epic Climate Showdown

Accra Metropolitan Assembly plans climate events to mark the 10th anniversary of the June 3rd disaster. Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey announced a summit and citywide cleanup campaign. The Assembly partners with youth environmental groups for these activities. Officials want to highlight urgent climate action needs for the growing city. The events will focus on building stronger defenses against future disasters.

The climate summit happens Tuesday June 3 2025 at 10 am at Omanye Aba Hall. Leaders will discuss the 2015 flooding and fire tragedy that killed over 150 people. Youth Climate Advocates help organize the meeting as part of their action fund program. Young people will lead climate projects across different communities. The summit theme warns about the dangers of ignoring climate problems.

Workers will clean gutters and remove plastic waste from markets and streets. Youth groups will lead the cleanup efforts throughout the city. Schools will receive climate awareness campaigns during the events. Community leaders plan stakeholder meetings to discuss environmental issues. The cleanup aims to get more local people involved in keeping the city clean.

The Assembly maintains drains in flood prone areas like Okaikoi South and Ablekuma South. Workers cleared high risk spots such as Korle Woko and London Market. Officials work with water experts to clear the Odaw Channel drainage system. The city upgrades some drainage pipes from smaller to larger sizes. These improvements help handle more rainwater during heavy storms.
