Acheampong confirms run for NPP flag-bearer in 2028 election

Bryan Acheampong announced his campaign for the New Patriotic Party leadership race. The Abetifi lawmaker formerly served as Food and Agriculture Minister. He wants to represent the party during Ghana's 2028 presidential election. Acheampong made his decision public after weeks of private talks and speculation.

The politician created a research group during May to study voter preferences. Party members had urged him to consider running for the top position. His team examined whether his plans matched what citizens and party officials wanted from their next leader. The committee finished its work and shared results with Acheampong recently.

Acheampong met with reporters Tuesday after visiting Presbyterian Church leaders. He belongs to that religious group and wanted to tell them about his political plans first. The research team found strong support for someone who brings people together. Voters want a candidate who helps young people find work and makes the country safer.

The former minister believes he can unite party members and give hope to citizens across Ghana. His goals focus on creating jobs and building better roads and bridges. Acheampong plans to enter the race when officials start accepting candidate applications. The party leadership scheduled January 31, 2026 for choosing their presidential nominee.

Several other politicians may seek the same position. Kennedy Agyapong, Yaw Osei Adutwum, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong and Mahamudu Bawumia could all compete for party leadership. The winner will face the current president during the next general election.
