Police caught three men stealing copper cables near Headlands last Monday morning. Officers arrested Tinashe Musara and Tatenda Zimweje from Chitungwiza and Jacob Muzungunye from Mutare. The suspects moved stolen cables between two vehicles at a bushy spot near Yorkshire Primary School. Detectives watched them for one week after receiving tips about hidden ZESA cables at Plot 97. The men tried running when they spotted police officers approaching their location.
Police chased the suspects along the Harare-Mutare Highway at high speed. Officers stopped both vehicles at Home Park Business Centre between Marondera and Macheke. Muzungunye drove a black Toyota Auris carrying brass parts and water tape pieces. Musara and Zimweje used a white Toyota Hilux packed with 1.5 tonnes of copper materials. The stolen goods came from power companies, telephone services and railway systems around Rusape.
Investigators connected the three men to another cable theft from June 3 at Vengere. Workers from TelOne, ZESA and National Railways identified their stolen property among the recovered items. The thefts cost utility companies thousands of dollars and disrupted services for customers. Police want people to report suspicious activities involving cable theft. Another man named Gift Rabiwa stole copper pipes and a chainsaw worth $2000 from a security company. The 23-year-old from Mutare jumped over a fence and broke into a wooden cabin. He took 50 kilograms of copper pipes during the break-in.
