Crackdown Targets Smuggling, Boosts Local Industries

The government started checking buses and stores all over Zimbabwe. They want to stop people from bringing things into the country without paying taxes. They care about keeping local businesses safe and making sure people get good products.

Last week, they began looking at places that sell drinks and fun spots. They take away cars and grab things like food and drinks that came in the wrong way. When they went to Bulawayo, they made some stores close for a bit.

Many groups work together to catch smugglers. The tax people, police, bank workers, and people who protect shoppers all help out. They say smuggling hurts Zimbabwe's companies and can make people sick.

Everyone must tell the tax office what they bring into Zimbabwe. If they don't, bad things can happen. People might need to show papers at road stops to prove they paid their taxes.

Minister Ncube talked about how serious this is. He said anyone who doesn't tell about things they bought in other countries breaks the law. This includes stuff they bought for themselves or to sell.

The government looks for stores that break rules. Some stores use wrong money rates or sell fake things. Others sell light products but say they weigh more. These things hurt Zimbabwe's money and jobs.

They put up road stops that work day and night. Teams check cars they think might carry hidden goods. They also walk into stores without warning to check if everything got here the right way.

Christmas time means more people come home from other countries. The government wants to work harder then because more people might try to sneak things in.

Mr. Mutashu, who speaks for store owners, likes what the government does. He said sneaked-in stuff can make people sick. He wants stores to follow the rules or face trouble.

He talked about how hidden goods like machines, soaps, and food hurt Zimbabwe's own makers. He said the government won't stop looking for people who break these rules.
