Two top security officers died when vehicles crashed near Mutimurefu Prison last night. Gift Nyama worked for the Central Intelligence Organization, and Masimba Blessing Mandimutsira ran prison operations at the facility. The deadly accident happened around 7:30 PM on a dangerous part of the Masvingo-Mutare Highway. Nyama drove into a dark tractor without lights after leaving a party at the 4/2 Brigade. Prison staff rushed to help, but another vehicle hit Mandimutsira during the rescue effort.
Chief Superintendent Simangaliso Dube tried to avoid the crash scene but struck the prison officer with his Ford Ranger truck. Nyama broke his neck and died right away from the impact. Doctors at Masvingo Provincial Hospital could not save Mandimutsira from his wounds. Superintendent Francis Makonese confirmed both deaths happened at the same road spot where another fatal crash occurred last year. Police continue looking into what caused the deadly chain reaction that killed both security workers.
