December 16 Faction Seeks New MK Secretary General

Members of South Africa's MK party are fighting over who should become the new secretary general after Jacob Zuma fired Floyd Shivambu. The December 16 faction wants spokesperson Nhlamwhile Ndhlela to take the job. Phumlani Mfeka and elections chief Bongani Baloyi might also compete for the position.

The December 16 group claims they helped start the MK party first. They believe people who joined from other parties like the Economic Freedom Fighters should not hold top jobs. Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla leads this faction and thinks former EFF members are taking over leadership roles.

The faction removed Mzwanele Manyi as chief whip and targets Busisiwe Mkhwebane next. They argue these leaders campaigned against MK during the 2024 elections when they still belonged to the EFF. Sources say the group wants to control the entire party structure.

One insider claims Shivambu tried to raise money from business people to start his separate political party. Another source believes outside forces are trying to weaken MK because the party became South Africa's main opposition group. The party replaced the EFF as the third largest political movement after recent elections.
