Demba Sabally's big plan for roaming cattle - to make a plan

Agriculture Minister Demba Sabally revealed that Gambia lacks a complete national transhumance policy during questioning by the National Assembly Joint Committee on Environment and Agriculture. Government agencies have begun developing such a policy through collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources. The International Organization for Migration provides assistance for this initiative.

Officials conducted a national consultation in July 2025 to confirm the data and tools necessary for policy formation. Climate vulnerability maps will identify problem areas and guide preventive measures for conflict-sensitive planning. The ministry plans to establish specific pasture development areas and water storage facilities during the next agricultural budget year.

Sabally emphasized that environmental protection must accompany transhumance activities. His department will work with environmental officials to promote controlled grazing systems and rotational methods for local communities. The minister stressed that successful policy implementation requires government-wide coordination and continued National Assembly partnership and supervision.
