Dubrovnik locals vote on airport expressway route

Blaž Pezo, the Dubrovnik-Neretva County Prefect, recently confirmed that local citizens will have the final say on the path of a new expressway to the airport. While the project aims to cut down travel times during the busy summer months, it has faced pushback from residents worried about the environmental and social impact. Pezo mentioned that officials from Croatian Roads have been meeting with engineers to address these concerns. He claimed that a new state law will help speed up the paperwork once everyone agrees on a specific route. The leader emphasized that the regional view and public opinion are mandatory parts of the planning process.

The southernmost area of Konavle has already settled on its portion of the road, but other sections are still being debated. The prefect noted that additional talks in the Parish of Dubrovnik should help clarify exactly where the community wants the asphalt to go. Minister Branko Bačić also weighed in, stating that the state will use its own development plans to bypass years of local red tape without ignoring the people. By getting the municipality and the local council to take a formal stance, the government hopes to finalize the map soon. Pezo insisted that the project will finally move forward once the locals give their approval for the placement.
