Fired manager's post reveals Microsoft's $50M Game Pass deals

A former Microsoft employee leaked information about how much the company pays to include games on Xbox Game Pass. Iain MacIntyre lost his job when Microsoft laid off 9,000 workers recently. He was a senior business development manager before being let go. During his time there, MacIntyre helped negotiate over 500 deals for Game Pass. These deals ranged from fifty thousand dollars to fifty million dollars each.

Microsoft spends huge amounts of money each month to keep popular games on Game Pass. They acquire both small indie titles and major blockbuster releases for the service. Big games like Call of Duty likely cost close to the fifty million dollar mark. Even smaller titles can cost hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars to add to the subscription. All these expenses add up to a significant sum for Microsoft.

There is ongoing debate about whether Game Pass actually generates profit for the tech giant. Microsoft claims the service is profitable even after accounting for game development costs. Former game studio executives believe this business model isn’t sustainable in the long run. Microsoft expects Xbox to generate substantial revenue to justify these expenses. If Xbox cannot meet these high financial goals, the company could face challenging times ahead.
