Ghana highway crash kills 3 schoolchildren, taxi driver

Four people died Monday afternoon when two vehicles crashed on the Winneba-Apam highway near Natwibuw. A Toyota Rav4 tried to pass another car and hit a taxi head-on around 4 p.m. Three students from Uncle Rich and St. Paul basic schools were riding home from classes when the accident happened. The taxi driver also lost his life in the crash. Emergency workers found the scene devastating.

The taxi driver died right away from his injuries. Rescue teams had trouble removing his body from the destroyed vehicle. One student also died at the crash site before help could arrive. Two other students suffered serious injuries and went to Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba. Both students died at the hospital despite medical care.

Two more students from the same accident remain at the hospital for treatment. Doctors report their conditions have improved and they appear stable. The taxi carried registration number CR 748-20 and the other vehicle had plates reading GN 5507-18. People who saw the crash described the impact as severe. Police officers have started looking into what caused this deadly accident that has shocked the local community.
