Guard gets 7 years for office arson

A 26-year-old security guard has gone to prison for seven years after he stole money and burned down his workplace. Tennat Chiremba took US$975 from Muzpen Security Company where he worked. He then started a fire, hoping to cover up his theft by destroying any proof against him.

The flames spread throughout the office and ruined US$16,010 worth of property. Police investigators discovered his plan to hide the theft through arson. Chiremba faced Masvingo magistrate Caroline Tafirei on Tuesday where he received his punishment after being found guilty.

Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri from the Criminal Investigations Department praised the court system. She said the Zimbabwe Republic Police appreciates how courts help fight crime and ensure justice. The case showed how law enforcement uncovered the calculated scheme despite attempts to hide it.
