Harare Water Crisis Filth Hits Dangerous Highs

The water in Harare faces serious pollution problems, according to local officials. EMA staff gather water samples every month from 24 different places around the city. They test these samples in their labs to check how dirty the water has become. The tests show high levels of phosphates have built up in the main dam. Oxygen levels have also fallen in the water.

People cause most of these water problems through everyday activities. Farming practices add chemicals to the water supply, and household waste makes the situation worse as it flows into streams. These issues create health risks for residents and harm local wildlife. EMA hopes its testing will help them find ways to clean up the water supply.
