Italy Issues Red Heat Alert for 21 Cities as Temperatures Reach 37 Degrees C

Italy's health officials warned people about dangerous heat levels across the nation Friday. The ministry placed 21 cities under its highest emergency alert for the weekend. Rome, Milan and Venice all received the red warning status. Temperatures may climb to 37 degrees Celsius in some areas. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos plans his wedding celebration in Venice during the extreme weather.

Health experts told residents to stay inside from 11 in the morning until 6 at night. People should find cool places with air conditioning during those hours. Venice expects 32 degrees Saturday but humidity will make it feel like 36 degrees. Lady Gaga will perform at the Bezos wedding party that same day. Florence already faced red alert conditions Friday with 37 degrees predicted Saturday.

Rome, Milan and Naples will see 36-degree heat Sunday. The capital has suffered through several days of scorching weather already. Police have fined tourists who tried to cool down in historic fountains. City workers placed ambulances and medical teams near the Colosseum and other busy tourist spots. Many visitors still flock to these attractions despite the heat warnings.

Climate scientists say these extreme heat waves show clear signs of global warming. The planet will experience more frequent and intense heat events. Human activities cause climate change that fuels these dangerous temperatures. Last year ranked as the hottest year ever recorded worldwide. Experts predict 2025 will rank among the three warmest years in history.
