Joanah Mamombe's photo stirs row over Victoria Falls road

A photograph shared by Harare West MP Joanah Mamombe depicting a bus mired in muddy ruts on what she identified as the route to Victoria Falls has triggered intense public disagreement over infrastructure conditions at one of Zimbabwe's most visited tourist sites. The image, which attracted over 20,000 views, divided commenters between those defending the scene as merely a temporary alternate route and critics who disputed that characterization based on their own recent travel experiences along the highway.

This marks the second time within months that viral imagery has challenged official accounts of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway's condition. Earlier, authorities denied that another widely circulated photograph showing people standing inside an enormous pothole corresponded to any actual location on that corridor, though they acknowledged certain segments required urgent repairs. Transport Minister Felix Mhona has stated that contractors are rehabilitating the 440-kilometer stretch in divided sections, with Treasury-funded work expected to finish by mid-2026.
