Magaqa killer sentenced to 25 years by Pietermaritzburg High Court

A killer walked into court and admitted he murdered a top political leader back in 2017. Sibusiso Ncengwa shot dead Sindiso Magaqa from the ANC Youth League during a brutal attack. The gunman also tried to kill three other people who were with Magaqa that day. Judge Nontuthuzelo Mlaba slammed Ncengwa with a 25-year prison sentence at Pietermaritzburg High Court. The judge said Ncengwa showed no respect for human life when he agreed to carry out the deadly plot.

Magaqa was driving through the uMzimkhulu area when Ncengwa opened fire on his car. Two women named Jabulile Msiya and Nonsikelelo Mafa were sitting with the political leader during the shooting. Another person called Nceba Mazongolo was standing nearby when the bullets started flying. All three survived the attack but suffered serious injuries from the gunfire. The court heard how Ncengwa planned the whole thing ahead of time.

Prosecutors hit Ncengwa with 11 different criminal charges for his role in the violence. The charges covered conspiracy to commit murder, actual murder, attempted murder, and illegal gun possession. He also faced accusations of damaging property during the deadly ambush. Some of his prison sentences will run at the same time rather than one after another. The court decided that most of his punishments should happen together to avoid keeping him locked up for decades.
