MEC Stays Open All Weekend For Nomination Papers

Election officials open their doors during the weekend to help candidates prepare for the 2025 general election. The Malawi Electoral Commission keeps all offices running Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 4 pm. Presidential hopefuls must visit the main office located at Lilongwe headquarters. Parliamentary and local government candidates should go to their district council offices instead. The commission wants to make sure everyone can collect nomination papers easily.

Banks operate different hours than election offices during weekend service. FDH Bank branches stay open Saturday morning from 8 am until noon for fee payments. Candidates cannot pay nomination fees after banking hours end at midday. Twelve bank locations across the country provide weekend payment services. Blantyre, Limbe, Zomba, Lilongwe Old Town, and eight other branches serve customers Saturday morning.

Election commission staff work extra hours to support the democratic process fairly. All people who want to run for office can access required documents during extended hours. The special weekend arrangement helps candidates from remote areas reach nomination services. Officials designed the system to remove barriers that might prevent qualified people from running. Election preparation becomes easier when offices stay open beyond normal business hours.
